The unique cheese is dedicated to the memory of Pastor Albert Bitzius – the man behind the alias Jeremias Gotthelf – one of Switzerland’s most famous authors. He lived in Lützelflüh in the Emmental Valley at the beginning of the 19th century. His most popular works include “Die Käserei in der Vehfreude” (The Cheese Factory in the Hamlet), which is about an Emmental creamery. The new Gotthelf Emmentaler AOP from Emmentaler Switzerland is still produced as it was in Gotthelf’s day, i.e. with home-grown cultures and in a cheese dairy that makes Emmentaler only once a day. Its intricate wheel label is decorated with scenes from Gotthelf’s bestseller.
